Happy birthday David Gilmour!

David Gilmour (March 6, 1946) is an English musician and the lead singer and guitarist for Pink Floyd. Gilmour wrote "Comfortably Numb" and produced the band's thirteenth studio album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The album was recorded mostly on Gilmour's houseboat, and went on to achieve quadruple platinum status in the US. Gilmour has released four solo albums and acted as producer for many other musicians. He is 67 today.

Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1967, when he was 21. At the time, Syd Barrett was often unable to play because of his heavy drug use, and Gilmour, with whom Barrett had attended school, was hired to cover him. Barrett left the band in 1967, and Gilmour became the lead guitarist and the main singer of the band.

The band's popularity exploded after the successes of The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, after which Roger Waters began to take more control of the band. Waters and Gilmour had an increasingly tense relationship, and Gilmour began to pursue a solo career after Waters wrote much of Animals and The Wall without consulting the rest of the band.

Gilmour released his first solo album in 1978. "Comfortably Numb" was also written during this time, but was finished too late to be included on the album.

His second solo album was About Face, in 1984. Waters and Gilmour continued to have a difficult relationship, and Gilmour said that he recorded About Face as a way to distance himself from the band. Waters left Pink Floyd in 1986 and filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the band from using the name Pink Floyd. Gilmour produced the band's next album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

In 2006, Gilmour released a third album, On an Island, and then Metallic Spheres in 2010. Gilmour is deeply committed to several philanthropic efforts and continues to tour. Gilmour has four children with wife and novelist Polly Samson, for whom he quit an addiction to cocaine. Gilmour is an avid pilot and works with organizations like Oxfam, Greenpeace, and Amnesty International.
