Wyman was born William George Perks in Lewisham, London to William and Molly Perks. His family was very poor, which he later described as being a huge influence on him. His first introduction to music was in taking piano lessons from the time he was 10 until he was 13.

He did three years in the national service. While he was in the RAF, he served in Germany, and this is where he first heard American rock and roll.

Wyman first bought himself an electric guitar in 1960, but quickly switched to bass. In 1962, he was invited to audition for the role of bass player for The Rolling Stones—he would succeed Dick Taylor.

Wyman was married and older than the other members of the band, which caused a rift personally with the band. In addition to playing bass, Wyman often provided backup vocals, including on "In Another Land," "Downtown Suzie," and others. (Image source)

Wyman began to take on projects outside of The Rolling Stones beginning in the 1970s. In 1971, he played on The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions with Howlin' Wolf, Eric Clapton, Charlie Watts and Stevie Winwood. He was the first in The Rolling Stones to release a solo album, releasing Monkey Grip in 1974.

He left the group after its 1989-90 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tours. Since he left the Stones, Wyman has led the band Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings.

Wyman is reputed to have had over 1,000 sexual partners. He is reported to have said that while his bandmates became addicted to drugs and alcohol, he became "girl mad." He has now been married three times, one of which was his controversial marriage to Mandy Smith, who was 18 at the time of the wedding and 13 when they first met.
