Wes Anderson (born May 1, 1969) is an American film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor. His films are known for their iconic cartoonishness, their soundtracks consisting of British rock and classics of the American folk revival, and for their consistently flawed characters. Some of his most notable works to date include The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and Moonrise Kingdom (2012). He often collaborates with the same people on his films.

Anderson was born in Houston, Texas to Melver Anderson and Texas Anderson. His parents divorced when Anderson was just eight years old, and Anderson has said the event was one of the most important events in his life. His artistic inclinations began to manifest themselves in Super 8 films and later in complex play productions at his school St. John's School in Houston.

Anderson attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he met actor Owen Wilson and who would go on to be a major influence and presence in his films. Wilson and Anderson became roommates and wrote the screenplay for the film Bottle Rocket (1996) while living together. The film went through a series of stages, first as a drama, then as a comedy, then as a short film that was entered into the Sundance Film Festival, and finally it received a budget large enough to be converted into a feature.

Their following film, Rushmore (1998) received more attention than the previous with the Critics Association of New York and of Los Angeles pronouncing Bill Murray best actor for his role as a businessman who befriends the young protagonist. But Anderson achieved real success when his next film was released in 2001; The Royal Tenenbaums achieved critical and popular acclaim, earning more than $50 million at the box office, a nomination for an Academy Award, and a spot among Empire's top 200 films of all time.
