Happy birthday Sophia Loren!

Sophia Loren (September 20, 1934) is an Italian actress. She is widely regarded as Italy's most acclaimed actress. Some of her most notable films include Two Women (1960), Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1963), and Marriage, Italian Style (1964).

Loren was born in Rome, Italy to Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone. Her father was a womanizer who left her mother. Loren grew up in poverty and lived in one of the worst-ravaged cities during World War II, Pozzuoli.

As a child, Loren was thin and frail. She was nicknamed "little stick" by her classmates.

When she was 15, she and her mother moved back to Rome to become actresses. She won second place in a beauty competition. In 1951, Loren landed her first film role in Mervyn LeRoy's Quo Vadis. She appeared in La Favorita (1952) before having her breakout performance in 1953's Aida. By the time she appeared in The Gold of Naples (1954), Hollywood took notice.

In 1957, Loren starred in her first Hollywood film, The Pride and the Passion. That same year, she became involved with Italian film producer Carlo Ponti, and the two would go on to have a 50-year long marriage until Ponzi's death in 2007.

By 1960, Loren was one of the biggest international stars. She appeared in Two Women (1960), Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1963), Marriage, Italian Style (1964), and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967). Loren earned an Oscar for Best Actress in Marriage, Italian Style and an Oscar for Best Foreign Film for Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1963).

Some of her other notable films include El Cid (1961), The Millionairess (1960), Lady L (1965), and Arabesque (1966).

Loren continued to appear in films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, but slowed down to raise her teenage sons.

She became the first female star to own her own perfume, and she went on to release a line of eyewear. In 1994, she published the book Women and Beauty. Loren has remained a beacon of style and beauty.

In addition to Academy Awards, Loren has won one Grammy, a BAFTA award, a Laurel Award, and the Honorary Academy Award.

She now lives in Geneva, Switzerland. With regard to health, she has said, "I always wake up early and jump out of bed—sometimes not wanting to, because one can always find an alibi not to exercise—and then I take a walk for an hour. And as I walk round the park I always think, 'Maybe round the corner I am going to find something beautiful.' I always think positively. It is very rare that you find me in a mood that is sad or melancholic."
