Happy birthday Meryl Streep!
Meryl Streep in an American actress who began as a stage actress, appearing in several Broadway productions in the late 1960's. Since then, she has become an established film actress, and is particularly known as a chameleon onscreen, with the distincr ability to mold herself into any role. Streep's best known films include The Deer Hunter (1971), Kramer vs Kramer (1979), Sophie's Choice (1982), Out of Africa (1985), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), Adaptation (2002), among many others.
Meryl Streep was born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey and graduated from Vassar College and Yale Drama School. Streep began her career on the New York stage in the late 1960s and appeared in several Broadway productions, including a 1977 revival of the Anton Chekhov drama The Cherry Orchard. In the 1970s with a role in the drama Julia (1977). The next year she appeared in The Deer Hunter opposite Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. (Image source)
That same year, she won her first Primetime Emmy for her role in the film Holocaust. In 1979, her portrayal of a woman who abandons her family only to come back and fight for custody of her son in Kramer vs. Kramer brought Streep her first Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress.
Next came one of her most emotionally-wrenching performaces of all time in Sophie's Choice, as a Polish woman forced to choose which of her children's lives to save during the Holocaust. For her incredible performance, Streep won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
In Out of Africa (1985), she took on the role of a Danish plantation owner living in Kenya. The role earned her another Academy Award nomination.
In 2002, Streep played author Susan Orlean in Charlie Kaufman's critically acclaimed film Adaptation, in which Streep plays a woman who becomes inexorably involved in the illegal drug trade through her fascination with certain rare species of orchids. The role earned her another Academy Award nomination. The following year, Streep appeared in the television adaptation of the award-winning play Angels in America. She won her second Emmy Award for her work on the program.
In 2006, Streep appeared in The Devil Wears Prada as Miranda Priestley, the calculating fashion magazine editor, which earned an Academy Award and SAG and Golden Globe nominations. She also appeared in the highly successful film adaptation of Mamma Mia! Next, Streep played Julia Child in the film Julie & Julia (below) transforming into the beloved American chef whose adorably solid marriage helped her establish a highly respectable career as an expert on French cuisine.
In 2011, Streep played Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady, for which she won her third Academy Award. Streep was praised for her talented portrayal of the British prime minister who inspires both admiration and considerable contempt. In order to prepare for her performance Streep sat through a session at the House of Congress.
