Maya Rudolph (born July 27, 1972) is an American film and television actress and comedienne. She is perhaps best known for her stint as a cast member on NBC's Saturday Night Live, but more recently has appeared in the films Away We Go (2009), Grown-ups (2010), The Zookeeper (2011), and Bridesmaids (2011).

Rudolph was born in Gainesville, Florida to singer Minnie Ripperton and music producer Richard Rudolph. The family moved to Southern California and her mother died of cancer when Rudolph was just seven years old. Soon after she began singing and appearing in local theater. After she graduated high school, she enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz to study photography. While in college, she was part of several bands including one called Super Sauce and another Weezer spin-off band called The Rentals.

After she graduated, she began to explore acting. She performed with the comedy troupe The Groundlings. Soon she landed small parts in the films As Good as It Gets (1997) and Gattaca (1997), and later on the TV drama Chicago Hope. In 1999, a producer for Saturday Night Live saw her performing with The Groundlings and she joined the show as a featured performer in 2000.

By 2001, she was a permanent cast member. Rudolph often played parts with a musical component as her singing abilities were a main part of her stage presence. She is also known for her impressions. Some famous figures she has portrayed include Beyonce, Macy Gray, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Lisa Kudrow, Paris Hilton, Wanda Sykes, and Whitney Houston.

 

Rudolph lent her voice to the character Rapunzel in Shrek the Third (2006), later reprising the role in Shrek Forever After (2010). She starred in the independent film Idiocracy (2006) and in 2009, starred in another independent film, Away We Go (2009). The last few years have seen Rudolph take her biggest strides, appearing in the hit comedies Grown-ups (2010), The Zookeeper (2011), and Bridesmaids (2011).

 

Since 2011, she has appeared in one of the leading roles in NBC's Up All Night.
