Peter Sellers (September 8, 1925—July 24, 1980) was a British comedian and actor. He is best known for his uncanny impressions. His most notable performances came in Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), A Shot in the Dark (1964), and the Pink Panther films.

Sellers was born Richard Henry Sellers in Southsea, Hampshire, England to Agnes and Bill Sellers. His parents called him Peter in honor of his older brother, who was stillborn. His parents were vaudeville entertainers, and Sellers spent much of his childhood on the vaudeville circuit.

He studied at St. Aloysius College, where he developed his improvisational skills listening to comedy sketches, including "Monday Night at Eight."

By the early 1940s, Sellers played drums with touring jazz bands. He also learned to play the ukulele and the banjo.

Just after his 18th birthday, he was drafted into the British Royal Air Force. He ended up an official Royal Air Force concert entertainer, performing for other servicemen

When he returned from war, he became very interested in working for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). He grew so impatient after unsuccessfully completing several auditions that he called up producer Roy Speer of the BBC show "Show Time," posing as a popular radio star and recommending his real self to Speer. This proved successful, and Sellers used his time on the air to develop his reputation.

He established himself as a master impersonator on the BBC program "Crazy People" (later renamed "The Goon Show").

Sellers began to appear in British films, and first achieved acclaim success with the film The Mouse That Roared (1959). He earned his first Oscar nomination in 1965 for his performances in four roles in Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

 

He went on to appear in A Shot in the Dark (1964), The Return of the Pink Panther (1974), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978).

 

Sellers had a very intense personality; he is said to have been obsessed with his work. He married a total of four times.

Sellers appeared in over 60 films as well as on radio and television.
