First things first, here's a message from Pedro Oliva, the professional kayaker who took the trip:
"I hope people don't see these images and think that it is safe to paddle so close to the lava because really it's not safe at all."
Hear that, everybody? Don't try to paddle your boat through fire. Now that we've got that business taken care of, these photographs are of a team of kayakers who traversed across an active volcano in south-central Hawaii. At one point, one of Oliva's oars caught on fire from the lava, which is not surprising because that's generally what happens when you put things into a fire.
