In the south Mediterranean Sea, Malta is both one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries in the world. Because of its strategic location, Maltese history involves control by the Phoenicians, Romans, Moorish, Spanish, French, and British, until Malta became a republic in 1974. Today, Malta is one of the world's most popular tourist spots, and is home to several World Heritage Sites, and some of the oldest free-standing architecture in the world's history.
