Architect Rahul Mehrotra recently received the Gold Medal Prize for his work in sustainable architecture for his design of the Hagigaon Elephant Village, a housing project for India's mahouts, or elephant riders. Because an elephant and his rider are bonded for life, and the rider is often the only human that the animal will obey, it is vitally important that they live in close quarters. Additionally. the total salary of a mahout is quite small, so their living arrangements are limited. With Mehrotra's housing development, the elephants and mahouts have the luxury of living together in a specialized setting, with plenty of room for the animals to move around.
