Happy Turtlesday! For the next few segments, we'll be featuring some of the more unusual species of turtles, inspired by this Listverse post. Today's handsome contestant is the spiny turtle (Heosemys spinosa) which is named, as you might have guessed, for the pointy spikes along the edges of its shell. It is also sometimes referred to as the 'cog wheel turtle.' The spiny turtle hangs out mostly in Southeast Asia, in countries like Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand, and it is currently endangered. Below, see some pictures of our spiky new friend, plus a video from the Tennessee Aquarium.
