Maria Popova of Brain Pickings alerted us to these awesome archival photographs of the very very early days of NASA, when it was NACA, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. American curiosity about space travel first had to deal with the issues of earthly aeronautics, and we had to build the very first machines that would take us somewhere near the last frontier. I may be biased, but the images, from NASA's incredibly fascinating public Flickr page, look like stills from a Kubrick movie or an excellently set-designed episode of The Twilight Zone.
